School of Economics

 

The School of Economics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics is nationally renowned for its dedication to excellence in teaching and research. The School offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs in Economics. It is the intellectual home of 59 faculties and 754 undergraduate and 230 graduate students (Fall 2007).

Due to the implementation of a special education reformation project called "Economics Innovation Platform", jointly funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as well as Shanghai Government, the School is currently in a phase of moving quickly toward the best economic program in China and building up international academic reputation in economics. During the past three years, the School has recruited twenty-seven tenure-track faculties from renowned universities in the world, such as Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Cornell, and Oxford. In the next three years, we will continue to hire up to 20 faculties with Ph.D. from top universities in North America and Europe. The faculties have published a large amount of high quality papers in peer refereed journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Econometrics, Games and Economic Behavior, and Annals of Statistics, etc.


History of the School

 

The School of Economics has a long history of excellent in economics teaching and research. In the early Thirties of the last century, then the University was called the National Shanghai College of Commence, the Center for Economics Research was established. The Center became the Department of Economics in 1980 and was renamed The School of Economics in 2000. Renowned professors Yefang Sun, Jichuang Hu, and Chengxian Song had worked in the School. Currently, the School has a large number of distinguished economists including professors Min Tan, Guoqiang Tian, and Jimmy Chan.

In July 2004, Guoqiang Tian, a professor of economics at the Texas A&M University in the US, was appointed as the Dean of the School. He is the first Dean ever hired from overseas by a mainland Chinese university. Under his leadership and with full support from the University officials, the School initiated historic economics reform and opened a new chapter in China¨s economics education.



Institute for Advanced  Research
 
 

The Institute for Advanced Research (IAR), founded in July 2006 by the School of Economics as an integrated component of ^Economics Innovation Platform ̄, is aimed at becoming a leading research institute on current economic and social issues in China and a think tank for government policymakers. The academic board of directors consists of domestically and internationally known scholars, including Nobel Prize winner Daniel McFadden.

The IAR has successfully established a research platform to facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations. It has a broad connection with other institutes such as the National Bureau of Statistical of China and the Development Research Center of the State Council. The IAR has a data survey division and eight research centers, including the environment and natural resource center, global education research center, health economics and policy center, agricultural development center, regulation and competition research center, policy evaluation center, and macroeconomic research center.
